Trade With Context: A Practical VWAP Framework
Learn how I use VWAP to judge trend, location, and bias before I ever place a trade. Then walk through it with me directly, in a 30-minute consultation built into the workshop.
Why VWAP
Trading isn't an exact science, and precision isn't the goal. VWAP gives you a structured way to read what price is actually doing, instead of guessing what it might do next.
VWAP stands for volume-weighted average price. Instead of averaging prices evenly, it weights each price by how much volume traded there, so it shows you roughly where the biggest money actually got involved. That makes it a much better read on fair value than a simple moving average.
Around VWAP sits a value area, roughly one standard deviation above and below the line. Statistically, that band contains about two-thirds of the trading activity for the period. It's not a signal to buy or sell. It's a map of where price is behaving normally and where it isn't.
Inside the value area, expect rotation: two-sided trade, wicks in both directions, failed breakouts. Outside the value area, price is rejecting the old value and searching for a new one, which is usually when real moves start.
See It On the Chart
Here's what this actually looks like once it's plotted. You'll set up this exact view yourself in the workshop.
VWAP Gives You a Clear View of the Auction No Matter What Timeframe You View
Which VWAP you read depends on how long you plan to be in the trade. In the workshop I show you how to pick the right one.
Anchored to the start of the calendar year. Best for trades you expect to hold two weeks or more, read on daily or weekly charts.
Anchored to the start of the calendar month. Built for trades lasting one to ten days, usually read on intraday charts.
Anchored to a specific swing high, swing low, or event, like the first session after earnings. Works on any timeframe.
You'll see the exact TradingView settings I use, including the one standard deviation bands, so you can set it up in five minutes.
The Three Setups You'll Learn
Every trade I take around VWAP fits one of these three patterns. If it doesn't fit, I skip the trade. That single rule does more for your discipline than any indicator.
Continuation
Price is trending, pulls back to VWAP or the value area, and then resumes in the direction of the trend. You'll learn how to tell a real pullback from a trend that's actually rolling over.
Fade
VWAP is flat and price is stuck inside the value area, overlapping and choppy. Price stretches toward a band, fails to break out, and rotates back. Common in the quiet stretch before a catalyst.
Reclaim
Price breaks out of the value area, fails to hold it, and reclaims the range. That failed breakout is often the tell that the move was exhausted before it ever really got going.
